CHAPTER 16

“What’s here,” I asked.

“The rain,” Gus answered. “A cold rain.”

I looked out the window, even as the sun faded. Dark clouds streamed in, making me wonder if the clouds and rain were magically produced. The sunny day was gone, and with it, went my sunny disposition. I wondered if I was doing any good at all. I hadn’t solved the murder. I had managed to make myself look like a fool. Julia reminded me of that. I didn’t know if Jill Havers was involved in any way, despite Julia’s information. I felt I was simply running in place, going nowhere. That was the trouble with running in place or riding a stationary bike. You put out a lot of effort and stayed exactly where you started.

And why was I trying to solve the case anyway?

The sheriff’s department was more than a little competent. Jason and Paul were excellent detectives, who were working hard on the case. I wasn’t any part of law enforcement. I wasn’t even an adjunct detective. Yet, I felt responsible, somehow. Why was that? It wasn’t justified. It wasn’t my problem.

Rain pattered down outside, a summer storm. The rain fit my mood. I wasn’t going anywhere.

“Why so glum?” Gus asked.

“I’m stuck,” I said. “I have accomplished exactly nothing. I’m no closer to solving the murder than I was yesterday. And I don’t see a way forward. I wonder why I’m laboring to no effect.”

“You can’t look at it that way,” Gus said. “You’ve made great progress. After all, you checked out Jackie’s alibi. You found out about the mirror and the dark magic. And that is the real problem facing Abbot Rise. If the dark magic escapes and takes hold of the town, all sorts of evils might ensure. You’re here, and you’re a witch. You must be ready to battle the dark, should it appear. Rather, when it appears, because it looks right now that it’s only a matter of time.”

“I can’t find the mirror,” I said.

“No one can. You have as good a chance as anyone and better than most. But no matter who finds the mirror, you have to be on hand to contain the dark magic. There are too few of you witches capable of turning the tide.”

“You’re right, of course. While I don’t yet have the mirror, if I give up now, I’ll never find it. So, we keep plodding along, right?”

“Plodding, as long as you don’t keep breaking into people’s houses and apartments. While you’ve managed to avoid any real consequences so far, there will come a day, when you get caught. Then, you’ll face some rather sticky problems.”

“You can’t have it both ways,” I said. “You can’t exhort me to help save the town and then tell me I can’t do what it takes to save the town. How can I find the information I need, if I can’t skip the locked doors? It’s not as if people are going to hand over their secrets.”

Besides, I thought, I didn’t break and enter all the time, just when I needed to.
